An island nation of rugged coastline, old-world charm and rich cultural heritage
One of the most popular cruising hotspots is the UK's renowned sailing mecca along the south coast, characterized by steep limestone cliffs, sheltered coves and charming fishing villages. From the Isle of Wight to the Scilly Isles there are myriad treasures to be uncovered.
Although the UK is not generally known for its sun and sands, this vast stretch of coastline offers a veritable medley of Caribbean-blue waters, swathes of golden beaches and pretty anchorage spots nestled in scalloped harbors, where guests can get ashore and enjoy meandering through cobbled streets and tiny lanes overlooked by characterful cottages and convivial pubs. Due to its popularity the region also offers plentiful marinas with excellent facilities, as well as a gateway to some of the best sailing in the world.
Another popular yacht charter itinerary is around the west coast of Scotland, popular for its bevy of wild and uninhabited islands, ancient settlements and astonishingly rich wildlife. Tourism in this region has blossomed in recent years, with superyachts jumping on the bandwagon. There are plenty of itineraries tailor-made for whisky aficionados, where stops incorporate world-famous distilleries and fine dining experiences, along with a few rounds of golf at some of the world’s leading golf courses.
Due to its central location within the region, charter itineraries can start in England’s capital city, embarking along the Thames and taking in the sights as the yacht cruises past London’s famous landmarks. Yacht charters can choose to head north along the UK’s rugged east coast with stops at Whitby, made famous as the setting in Bram Stoker’s acclaimed vampire novel, and the breathtaking Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve near Northumberland. Alternatively, yacht charters can make a beeline southwards to cruise along the UK’s popular south coast, either on its own, or inclusive of the spectacular Channel Islands, including Jersey and Guernsey, and the Scilly Isles.
The United Kingdom abounds in nature and spectacular wildlife no matter where you cruise, and there are myriad pretty anchorages where you can drop anchor and enjoy the stunning views. Outside of the south coast, there’s not a huge array of marinas, so it’s well worth organizing your trip around any nights you and your guests wish to spend in a slip.
The United Kingdom generally enjoys a temperate maritime climate thanks to the Gulf Stream bringing warming winds across the Atlantic Ocean, with the best months to charter being through the high summer months of June to early September, although naturally the climate is slightly cooler further north.
Encompassing scenic beauty, charming fishing ports and seductive wind-swept isles, the UK offers up an astonishing array of splendid destinations, whether you’re keen on exploring the nation’s rich cultural heritage, want to experience the adrenaline of Cowes Week regatta or simply want to find your own idyllic haven in amongst the numerous isles peppered around it’s coastline, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
