5 of the Best Sailing Yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2017

By Rebecca Bradbury   4 September 2017

Among the 125-strong fleet of superyachts attending the Monaco Yacht Show 2017, there will be an impressive collection of sailing yachts. YachtCharterFleet rounds up five of the best to look out for when the iconic Monaco event gets underway on 27th September.

From the latest launches to hit the water to 1930s classics, a varied array of sailing yachts has signed up to attend this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, proving the annual yachting meet to be about more than just the motor yachts. Read on to discover five of the best sailing yachts planning to make an appearance.

SEVEN

Launched just last month by Perini Navi, luxury yacht SEVEN will be making her debut in Monaco and, at 59 metres, is anticipated to be the largest sailing yacht in attendance.

Unfortunately, the new build isn’t available for charter, but her two predecessors from the 60M Series - sailing yacht SEAHAWK and sailing yacht PERSEUS^3 – can be rented for private yachting vacations and are both regulars on the regatta circuit.

Like her sisterships, SEVEN has a sleek hull and superstructure with naval architecture optimised by Ron Holland. She has been designed to achieve peak performance as well as be comfortable for bluewater cruising.

Departing from her forerunners, she features an interior from Studio Dante Bellini and is the Italian design firm’s first Perini Navi project. As she only hit the water at the start of August, show-goers will be excited to see her up close.

PINK GIN VI

Another 2017-launch, the 54m/176ft sailing yacht ‘Pink Gin VI’ is not available for charter but, as the largest carbon fibre sloop in the world with some of the most innovative features seen in a sailing yacht, she definitely deserves a mention.

Among the highlights of the Baltic Yachts-build are two opening balconies set in the topsides, the yard’s revolutionary Force Feedback Steering System, and an 18-ton carbon composite hull and deck shell built to the highest degree of accuracy.

Her interior styling from UK-based Design Unlimited is said to be ‘show-stopping’ but remains firmly under wraps until the yacht’s unveiling at the Monaco Yacht Show.

What we do know is that it’s ‘a surprising mix of uniquely treated timber, petrified wood, salmon skin, gilded bronze, zinc, pewter and hammered copper, soft leather and velvets’.

RAINBOW

A winner at the World Superyacht Awards 2013, the 40m/131ft charter yacht RAINBOW is a modern copy of one of the most renowned yachts associated with the golden age of the America’s Cup and will be sure to wow show-goers with her classic good looks when she lines up in Port Hercules.

Faithfully reproduced from the original 1930s drawings at the Holland Jachtbouw, the new RAINBOW embodies much historical pedigree. Yet, she is fitted out with a number of modern features such as a carbon mast, and complex hybrid and hydraulic technologies.

Also of note is her luxurious mahogany interior, which is a true echo of an earlier age. Art deco touches add a sense of glamour to the rich, beautifully finished woodwork, and up to eight guests can sleep on a private yacht charter in three cabins.

DORIANA

The 38m/128ft charter yacht DORIANA first hit the water in 1930. Built at Frederikssund shipyard in Denmark for the famous Danish ship owner Iva Lauritzen, she sailed around the Swedish and Norwegian coasts before, under American ownership, being chartered out of Antigua in the 1970s.

She was then returned to her former glory in 2005 following an extensive two-year restoration, which saw renowned designer Donald Starkey head up her updated mahogany interior.

An ideal charter choice for a classic sailing yacht enthusiast, she is able to sleep up to 10 guests in five traditional staterooms. Other highlights include skylights, a large salon with a corner bar, expansive deck spaces and racing pedigree.

SHOGUN

Another Holland Jachtbouw offering, the 37m/121ft charter yacht SHOGUN was launched in 2006 and, with a smooth and clean-looking profile and a striking ‘Mercedes’ silver-grey hull, she will be sparkling in the Mediterranean sunshine when the show kicks off.

Her John Munford-designed interior is similarly easy on the eye. Warm and modern, the communal and guest areas offset pear and wenge woods with white panels and woven leather inserts. And, a generous accommodation layout sleeps up to six guests in three cabins.

SHOGUN offers more than aesthetics and comfortable guest areas, however. Technically advanced, she is first and foremost a high performance sailing yacht and is currently in optimal condition following a recent refit.

With a smooth and clean-looking profile and a striking ‘Mercedes’ silver-grey hull, SHOGUN will be sparkling in the Mediterranean sunshine when the show kicks off
