This annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of professional American football in America and is frequently the most watched American TV broadcast of the year.
The Super Bowl is the game that concludes the season that began in the late summer of the previous year. Using Roman Numerals to identify each game rather than the year in which it is held, it was originally created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and it's rival league, the American Football League (AFL).
Considered by some as a de facto American national holiday, 'Super Bowl Sunday' is one of the most watched sporting events in the world. But it is not just the sport that attracts viewers. Commercial air time during the broadcast is the most expensive of the year, with many advertisers regularly developing their most expensive adverts for their allocated slot. In addition to this, many singers and musicians now perform during the pre-game and half-time ceremonies to make the most of the exposure the game provides, making it so much more than just a sporting event.
