Situated between the Waigeo and Batanta Islands in Raja Ampat, this nutrient-rich stretch of water has an incredible array of marine life you won’t want to miss during your next luxury yacht charter in the region.
Named after the English adventurer-explorer who first charted the area in the 17th-century, the Dampier Strait is the perfect place to try out your motor yacht's snorkeling and diving gear while cruising round Indonesia. Given the strait’s strong current, vital nutrients can flow easily into its waters, allowing its marine biodiversity to thrive: the deep blue waters are home to over 200 species of coral and a staggering 3000 different species of fish.
Delving below the deep blue water’s surface, you and your charter guests will be wowed by the vibrant colors of this underwater kingdom. Be sure to look out for yellow striped snappers, sweetlips, manta rays, and the rare but beautiful wobbegong sharks.
After a morning of swimming with the fish, dry off with some bird watching. Since the strait is located near to Gam Island, it is the perfect vantage point for watching the wildlife that lives in the nearby island’s lush mangroves. With your camera at the ready, see if you can spot any red birds of paradise or Blyth’s hornbills flitting round the forests; if you keep quiet, then you may hear the callings of cockatoo, and a cuscus marsupial monkey might even crawl out to say hello!
