Swedish team Artemis Racing clinched overall victory in the latest leg of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, held over the weekend in Toulon on the French Riviera.
Skippered by Nathan Outteridge, Artemis were victorious in two of the three opening races on Saturday, the first day of the competition, before scooping a third win from four on the final day.
In an incredible turnaround, Softbank Team Japan went from finishing last on Saturday to taking second place overall. However, British team Land Rover BAR now top the series leader board with 437 points after scooping third place at the weekend.
Land Rover BAR, skippered by Ben Ainslie, got off to a bad start at the French Riviera event, coming last in the two opening races before claiming victory in the third and following this by a win in race five on Sunday.
Home side Groupama Team France finished in fourth place, followed by Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA in fifth and sixth place respectively.
All eyes are now on the highly-anticipated final round of the America’s Cup World Series, taking place in Fukuoka, Japan, from November 18th to 20th and marking the first time America’s Cup racing has taken place in Asia during the event’s 165-year history.
After this weekend of racing, Land Rover BAR lead the overall series by 14 points over Oracle Team USA, with Emirates Team New Zealand only two points behind in third place.
The America’s Cup World Series serves as preliminary events to the 35th America’s Cup to be hosted on the Great Sound of Bermuda in June 2017. Overall ranking position in this series will determine the starting points score of the teams in next year’s qualifiers for the main event.
Regattas in the World Series are raced in the AC45F class – a one-design catamaran powered by a wing sail that flies above the water on foils and is sailed by a crew of five.
However, the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers and Challenger Playoffs as well as the America’s Cup Match will be raced in the new America’s Cup Class – a very fast, foiling, wing-sailed catamaran, manned by six crew.
