Superyacht Travel via Suez Canal to Become Easier

By Editorial Team   6 July 2015

Egypt’s $8.6 billion investment into the expansion of the Suez Canal is set to make travelling from East to West by superyacht considerably easier from 6 August.

Two-way travel will soon be available on the Suez Canal with the addition of a 72km channel, making the migration of luxury yachts each season much more time-effective. It is predicted the new channel will lower the waiting time of vessels by as many as 8 hours.

Currently a one-way system with only two set times for passage for convoys, delays are currently experienced whilst waiting for vessels from the opposite direction to pass.

With the new change, the average travelling time of superyachts is dramatically cut from 17 to 9 hours (accommodating yachts with a draft of up to 20m). The canal is a prime route for luxury vessels travelling to Indian Ocean, South East Asia and the South Pacific, as for most it offers a shorter travelling time than the Panama Canal.

It additionally foreseen that the amount of vessels travelling on the Suez Canal will likely rise from 49 to 97 vessels by locals in the industry, to continue the recent upward trend of superyacht visitors.
