On the 4th May 2013 the sleepy, picturesque port of Poros island in Greece became a hub of superyacht activity as it welcomed a selection of the world’s finest luxury charter yachts to its shores for the 12th consecutive year of the show that is now called the East Med Yacht Show.
As the Mediterranean sun shone down, both Greek and international yacht charter brokers from around the world took to the marina to view the impressive fleet of Greek Charter yachts on display. This year there was a large contingent from the larger brokerage houses such as Camper & Nicholsons with Senior Charter Brokers Tandy Demarchelier, Barbara Dawson and Anne Sterringa all in attendance. Also present at the show were Yachtzoo, Aris Drivas, Atlanta Golden, Athens Yachts and Seascape Yachts as well as charter experts such as Mary Crowley from Ocean Voyages who specialises in luxury expedition trips to the Galapagos.
The East Med Yacht Show is a very important event as it offers charter industry professionals the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the condition of each yacht. They can explore the interior and exterior areas first-hand and meet their crew’s in order to then recommend to their charter clients for the upcoming season in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. Some highlights during the show included the 57m (187’) sailing yacht Fleurtje, the 38.4m (126’) motor yacht Mabrouk and the 45m (148’) Ouranos.
In addition to the magnificent charter yachts that were exhibited, from 45m motor yachts to catamarans to classic sailing yachts, a number of watersports were displayed including a presentation of the new must have charter toy – the flyboard. A number of glittering evening parties were also held on board several of the luxury yachts, with delicious food (including some divine sushi on board Mabrouk), cocktails and live music being enjoyed well into the early hours of each morning.
The show is organised by the Hellenic Professional Yacht Owners Association (H.P.Y.O.A.) and the Hellenic Yacht Brokers Association (H.Y.B.A.) under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organisation as well as the Municipality of Poros. After a turbulent couple of years in Greece that has seen the tourism sector battle to stay afloat, it was the warmth and genuine hospitality of the Greek people combined with the breath-taking surroundings that set the tone for the show.
The sense of solidarity within the yachting community is continually evident and has become crucial in getting luxury yacht chartering in Greece back into the conscience of international travellers. Campaign’s such as ‘Share Greece’ and ‘Greek Sea. Not in Crisis’ continue to defiantly bring attention to all the positives that the beautiful country and islands have to offer. Its long maritime traditions, thousands of miles of spectacular and diverse coastlines and fantastic climate make the region ideal for unforgettable luxury yacht charter vacations.
