British Virgin Islands scraps duty fees on fuel for superyachts

Following a decision made by the local government, yachts visiting the British Virgin Islands can now benefit from duty-free fuel purchases when they spend more than three days in the cruising grounds of the BVIs.

In a bid to welcome more yachts to the British Virgin Islands, the government has amended its custom regulations to scrap duty fees on fuel for superyachts.

The decision came into immediate effect in December and was announced as part of the 2020 fiscal year budget.

Both privately-owned and charter yachts can take advantage of the cost-saving, as long as they stay within the local territory for a minimum of three days.

“This will be a step in the right direction towards encouraging megayachts to make the BVI their home port,” says Andrew Fahie, the Premier of the BVIs.

The island chain is already a popular destination for luxury yacht charters, with its sandy shores, rich coral reefs and variety of islands promising varied and relaxing itineraries.

It also benefits from an international airport in Tortola, allowing guests increased freedom and flexibility to start of finish their superyacht vacation in the British Virgin Islands.

This, coupled with the new regulations, is set to add more appeal to the destination for superyachts looking to visit the Caribbean this year.
