2021 Cannes Film Festival prepares for anticipated return

By Katie Scott   6 July 2021

Canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers have promised a show of shows to make up for lost time, boosted by a great selection of stars and new films.

And, as anyone fortunate enough to visit this coastal paradise will confirm, the best way to experience Cannes is by yacht, and that's doubly true when the Film Festival is on. Whether you want to host a party or just drink in the vibe, a yacht charter adds another dimension to what is an incredible week.

Alongside the show-sparkle, safety has taken paramount importance for the event to get the go-ahead, with a testing centre on hand plus multiple protocols which must be adhered to by all who attend.

Expecting a flurry of A-listers and celebrities including Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Jodie Turner-Smith, Timothée Chalamet and Frances McDormand, the usual expectance of glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival will be featured on the red carpet, however, full attendance will not be confirmed due to potential COVID-related travel restrictions.

Headlining movies

A silver lining to the lost 2020 festival, there's an abundance of films to see and review, including The French Dispatch. Starring Bill Murray, Timothée Chalamet, Elisabeth Moss, Frances McDormand and Saoirse Ronan the film has endured many delays but is now set for the limelight, much to the delight of those attending the popular French Riviera event.

The coveted Palme d’Or will of course be returning, with 24 films including Nitram, Drive My Car, Memoriam and Lingui all battling for the highest award presented at the festival.

New for 2021, Cannes Premieres has been introduced in order to give newcomers a chance to shine at the prestigious event. Documentaries have also been awarded more space at this year's program.

An adapted social scene

With many global travel restrictions still influencing visitors into France, there has been perhaps foreseen confirmation that the social scene usually attached to the Cannes event will be smaller than its usual reputation.

Cannes Film Festival President, Pierre Lescure, has stated the organizers have a 'responsibility to everyone – the festival, the town, the participants – that this post-pandemic event goes smoothly.'

However, even with the mainland parties at a seeming standstill, private parties onboard luxury yacht charters are a major perk for the event. Corporate charters remain an integral part of the prestige setup for the film festival, with many celebrities opting to join exclusive gatherings in the Vieux Port.

Scheduled to run from the 6-17th July, there may still be time to secure a last-minute Cannes charter yacht to coincide with the latter end of the event. To find out more about joining the festivities contact your preferred yacht charter broker today.
