Located in Nantucket, Massachusetts, the Whaling Museum is practically an institution, offering extraordinary insight into what it was like to be part of the demanding and dangerous trade of 18th century whaling, and a highly recommended stop off on your New England yacht charter.
Fully restored in 2005 with an entrance featuring a huge 46-foot bull sperm whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling, the museum showcases permanent and rotating exhibitions; home to a vast collection of whaling artifacts and memorabilia, including longboats, harpoons and scrimshaw.
Be sure to factor in enough time to explore each of the nine history-rich galleries, which include a new interactive holographic experience and exquisite scrimshaw collection featuring engravings from some of the finest scrimshaw artists of all time.
As well as daily programs, spotlight tours and films created exclusively for Nantucket Historical Association, visitors can also climb the circular staircase to the top of the museum where you’ll find Tucker's Roofwalk, offering unparalleled views over Nantucket Harbor.
There are also plenty of interactive activities, crafts, games and movies for all ages, including the 25-foot long and masterfully detailed Nantucket Railroad model.
And don’t forget to visit the Museum Shop at the end, where you will find a vast range of merchandise relating to Nantucket’s present and past, perfect as a souvenir or a gift for loved ones.
