Watching over the grand Piazza del Plebiscito at the heart of the Old Town in Naples, The Royal Palace was completed in 1620, and was initially home to the Spanish Viceroy, at a time when that region of Italy was part of the Spanish Empire.

Carlos III, as King of Naples and Sicily, took up residence in 1734, and in 1808 the palace became the property of Joachim Murat - Napoleon's brother-in-law - who embellished the building with lavish Neoclassical furnishings.
