Known locally as Bahia Magdalena, this 50-kilometer stretch on the Pacific side of the Baja California Sur has been a haven for California Grey whales for centuries, and forms one of the region's main attractions on your Mexico yacht charter.
The California Grey whales were nearly hunted into extinction in the 1800s, but luckily after whale hunting was banned have returned to the region in ever-increasing numbers to feast on the nutrient-rich waters found between the channel running through the two islands; Isla Magdalena to the north and Isla Santa Margarita to the south.
The whales make their migration south to mate, give birth and rear their young, before making the long journey home. The utmost respect must be given when diving with these majestic creatures, where you may also spot blue and humpback whales, as well as whale sharks and striped marlin, the fastest fish in the sea.
This area is also renowned for huge bait balls of sardines, which attract a host of top predators to its shores and is hands down one of the most thrilling spectacles you'll ever witness.
The instagram-worthy islands themselves are rocky and mountainous, with tall beach sand dunes and thick mangroves growing on the shores to both sides, with mesmerizing color formations that appear to change with the fading light.
The mangroves are also a fantastic chance to spot myriad birds from different types of heron, ibis, egret and many other coastal species.
