Coral gardens, exotic fish and incredible creatures can be found around Mafia Island, off the coast of Tanzania, and scuba-diving is the ultimate way to get up close to this wondrous underwater world.
Aptly named after the Swahili word for healthy-dwelling place, the seas around Mafia Island are home to a mesmerising spectrum of aquatic life. In 1995, the area was declared a protected marine reserve, and the local people are now dedicated to preserving the complex and expansive ecosystem of this unspoilt region.

Expect to encounter kaleidoscopic coral reefs and one of the world’s most elusive species of fish: the whale shark.
YachtCharterFleet’s editorial team had the privilege of diving in the Mafia Island Marine Park on our recent trip to Thanda Island. With the help of a local five-star PADI dive school, seasoned scuba pros and those with no experience whatsoever can get up close a breathtaking variety of marine life.
We spent part of the week on a private yacht charter, so the dive instructors met us on a sanbank near the dive site to give us our thirty-minute introduction to diving.
We were talked through the basics, from safety precautions to hand signals for communicating underwater, followed by more in-depth information to ensure the experience was smooth and safe.

After a brief quiz to test our new knowledge, the instructors assisted us into our scuba gear and we waded out into the shallows around the sandbank. We were then divided into groups, each with a dive instructor who assisted us as we got to grips with breathing underwater.
Once satisfied their students were safe and comfortable, the instructors loaded up their boat with the scuba gear and took us out to the dive site.
Some of the best dive sites are found around Chole Bay, where the shallow reefs are abundant with marine life and perfect for beginners. Here, divers can expect to find starfish, sumo crabs and parrot fish darting through the shallows.
Just outside the bay, however, lies a long stretch of coral wall. We chose to dive here, in the hopes of finding a more diverse selection of wildlife.
We weren't disappointed- this area is home to more than 50 different types of coral, including enormous table corals and intricate webs of staghorn coral. This healthy habitat has created a prime living environment for more 400 known species of fish, giving us plenty to soak in while we dived.
Divers can expect to see seahorses idling between the coral, stingrays gliding along the ocean floor and octopi clinging to the rocks and changing colour to conceal themselves in their surroundings.
The dive instructor will be on hand to point on other well-camouflaged creatures as well. We saw cardinal fish, which are renowned for their evasiveness, and clown fish peaking out from behind anemone.
This healthy habitat has created a prime living environment for more 400 known species of fish, giving us plenty to soak in while we dived.
Lucky divers might also spot whitetip reef sharks preying on the reef's larger fish species. The editorial team spotted several, but their speed and wariness of humans meant they didn't stick around for long.
While barracudas, bull sharks and hawksbill turtles are all native to these waters, our dive instructor informed us we wouldn't see any unless we were in deeper waters and they're more commonly spotted at night.

Humpback whales and whale sharks can also be found in the Mafia Island Marine Reserve; you can arrange an excursion to scuba-dive with the whale sharks, and the humpback whales pass through in the summer months.
