Located inside the Pula Archaeological Park, Nora has been one of the most important Sardinian cities during ancient times and it is still considered one of the best-preserved, most important historical sites on the whole island.
Situated a few km from Cagliari, the ancient city of Nora offers an abundance of interesting ruins, breathtaking sea views and immense history.
First established by the Phoenicians during the 8th century BC, the city was the first Phoenician city in Sardinia and functioned as an important commercial crossroads and port or the Capo Pula, from which they could sail in any weather.
It is truly immense to be surrounded by so much archeological history and beauty, the whole experience is truly fascinating
Originally lined with marble with 20 terraces that could hold 1,000 people, like any prosperous Roman city Nova boasted an impressive amphitheater for entertainment. From the 5th century, the city went into decline and was eventually lost to the Arab invaders after they took Carthage in 698 AD, becoming a simpler port.
Today, visitors can explore and walk the remains of the flourishing ancient city and stroll through the old cobbled streets. Enter the Piazza del Foro where you will see a 6-columned entrance hall belonging to a temple before visiting a nobleman’s house built in the 3rd century AD, full of beautiful mosaic-lined rooms.
As soon as you enter the site, you can see a thermal complex (Terme di Levante), which is not the only one in the area: the city was, in fact, famous for its beautiful thermal baths, and four of them are still left there nowadays, in different stages of preservation.
You should also be sure to visit the well-preserved theatre, the only Roman Theater in all of Sardinia. Originally used as an essential meeting place for the locals throughout the centuries, today, it is used as a location for various concerts and shows.
