One of the most iconic attractions of any Bahamas yacht charter, seeing the endangered Bahamian Rock reptiles is an absolute must.
Bitter Guana Cay (or as it's more affectionately known Iguana Island) lies north of the Exumas, which is widely considered to be the most heavenly region in the country, and a visit here can be easily incorporated into a Bahamas yacht charter while island-hopping to your heart's content.
Known for their distinctive thick-ringed tail (their scientific name derives from the Greek words for circular tail "cyclos oura") they are approximately two feet in length but can reach a maximum of four, with scales a distinctive iridescent pinkish hue. They can also live for up to 40 years.

The species is threatened, and potentially in danger of becoming extinct in the not-so-distant future. There are approximately just 5,000 left with the population decreasing by more than half in the last 60 years.
Bahamian Rock Iguanas are pretty friendly creatures and are used to human interaction, which makes a visit here all the more joyful. However, do keep in mind that this is their territory, and it pays to be respectful of their boundaries at all times.
