Overlooking the central canal of Alesund, BRO occupies a split-level venue with interior decor that epitomizes Scandi-chic. But beyond its elegant aesthetics, the menu is a superb showcase of regional flavours dressed up with fresh twists.
When YachtCharterFleet had the pleasure of dining at BRO Alesund on our visit to Norway, we discovered this gastronomic gem tucked along the river next to the town's main bridge.
The restaurant is popular, so it's advisable to book ahead. Downstairs the restaurant has a laid-back vibe, with a completely open kitchen which allows diners to watch the action unfold in front of their eyes. Upstairs, the floor is laid out with a mixture of dining tables and cocktail tables, with a well-stocked bar stretching out across the centre of the space.
For an evening meal, be sure to grab a table overlooking the river. The sparkling lights of Ålesund bounce off the water, creating a beguiling setting for an evening aperitif, romantic meal or special occasion.
You'd be remiss not to start with puffed cod skins, a local specialty which has a similar taste and texture to a prawn cracker, but with more flavour.
Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails, BRO has the friendly and approachable service of a gastro-style pub, but its dedication to food lends it an upscale quality.
If you're visiting in the springtime, then be sure to start with a cocktail outside on the terrace. The bar staff have endless knowledge about the artisan and craft spirits behind the bar, so don't be afraid to put your trust in their hands and ask to be surprised.
With your appetite whet, head inside and browse the menu. You'd be remiss not to start with puffed cod skins, a local specialty which has a similar taste and texture to a prawn cracker, but with more flavour. They come served with bacon and chilli mayonnaise and are undisputedly delicious, in spite of their bizarre appearance.

Those looking to sample truly authentic Nordic cuisine should opt for the grilled red cabbage as a main. This seemingly simple dish is elevated with the help of butter sauce, white asparagus, currants and white strawberries.
For something more meaty, choose the Solund white sheep with creamed black cabbage, or the salted cod poached in milk with beet leaves. Expect only the freshest of fish from BRO- local fishermen often sail straight up to the restaurant to sell their day's spoils to the chef.
Even the bread at BRO is something special- served warm, this potato-baked bread is accompanied by hand-whipped butter resting in green leek oil and topped with a sprinkling of black cod.
Round off the meal with a dessert- the clear frontrunner from the desserts menu is the Norwegian apple with vanilla gelato, hazelnut cream and lemon verbena.
